Our story…

Cosy evenings curled up alone or with friends. Sumptuous, thick, luxurious and stylish. All natural and for the rest of your life.

A few years ago I looked into my family tree and got it back to Joseph Denton, born in 1700 and a weaver. To my surprise most of my ancestors up until modern times were weavers. This set me off on a voyage of discovery which has resulted, many years later, in Gneiss Rugs.

The rugs are made on a handmade peg loom which is one of the oldest forms of weaving. Everything is done by hand, the only electricity used is for the lights and the cups of tea!

The rugs are made of selvedge from the weaving industry. When woven fabric is cut from the loom, the strips left are gathered and called selvedge. Thus each Gneiss Rug is made from the very best quality woollen fabric! In addition, as the rugs are made from a by product of the weaving industry, it makes them eco friendly especially as I do not treat the rugs with any chemicals whatsoever. Due to the material the rugs are made from each rug is extremely hard wearing as well as being soft underfoot. No two rugs are alike which makes each rug one of a kind.

My rugs are made from the very best quality woollen selvedge from mills throughout the United Kingdom.

The only other material used is the warp thread. This is the strong thread that runs through the rugs and holds the tweed in place. I use Nutscene twines, the best quality twine on the market, which is manufactured in Scotland still using the original machinery since 1922. A natural jute product, produced from sustainable sources for over 90 years.

The style of the weaving is heavily influenced by the gneiss rock formations which can be found on the Scottish Islands. Different sized bands of colours imitating nature’s natural beauty.

Gneiss Rugs are made of selvedge from various mills throughout the United Kingdom. These include:-

Small scale mills on the Isle of Lewis, which specialise in producing hand woven Harris Tweed. Thus rugs made in this selvedge are made of the best quality woollen highland tweed.

Mallalieus of Delph, which is a top quality British Mill, founded in 1863. Wool arrives and is then woven into the finished fabric under the same roof. Their fabrics are gorgeous and they supply some of the world’s top fashion houses, such as Burberry.

Melin Tregwynt, a woollen mill on the Pembrokeshire coast. The mill prides itself in keeping Welsh weaving alive and produces woollen fabric which can be found in design led stores and hotels across the world.

Each rug is individually priced and no two are the same. I hope you enjoy your rug for many years to come.
